In an age where cars drive themselves, transactions are made at the instantaneous click of a button, and you can find, literally, everything on your phone — what we’re going to say next is pretty shocking. US airline carriers are just now implementing a tracking system for your luggage.

US airline carriers are just now implementing a tracking system for your luggage.

NBC News reported that Delta Airlines will soon provide trackable luggage tags. The system, which seeks to rid passengers of the anger and frustration, not mention time wasted, associated with lost baggage is using some seasoned technology to solve an age old problem. The Atlanta-based airline will rely on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which uses radio waves to identify and track an object. The announcement was the first of its kind, in that no other airline has committed to an entire overhaul of its barcode bag tracking system. The tech upgrade will cost Delta about $50 million.

No other airline has committed to an entire overhaul of its barcode bag tracking system.

According to NBC News, “Baggage handlers will be able to get all the information they need about a bag from a tiny chip placed inside an otherwise unassuming paper luggage tag instead of having to scan each individual barcode by hand. When loading bags, a light will flash green if everything is on track or red to alert a handler a bag may need more attention.”

This added convenience could also prove to be profitable for promotional products vendors and suppliers, as we are sure there will soon be a demand for branded RFID tags.
