Fitbit is literally saving lives. Recently a story surfaced proving that stats on a New Jersey man’s Fitbit gave doctors vital, and other life-saving information. Shortly thereafter, the public went crazy. Now, it seems that all generations are thinking more seriously about wearable technology items, especially when it comes their medical needs. No longer are personal health based watches seen as mere calorie counters. With this expanded offering in medical health and wellness, we started throwing out numbers for increased profitability within this market. A recent report from Transparency Market Research indicated that the wearable device market could reach $980 million by 2020. That equates to a 14.2 growth percentage in just for years.

Fitbits and other wearable devices allow patients to monitor their own conditions, which in turn can eliminate frequent trips to the doctor’s office. According to the press release, devices offering this type of remote patient monitoring, is likely what will cause this boom.

This opens the door for companies that specialize in medical technology as well as technological power hitters, like Apple, to throw their hats in the ring as well. This summer, Apple applied for a patent for its own wearable health device that would be included in different wearable accessories.

In the upcoming years, we can’t wait to see how companies will implement wearable health monitors in accessories and other promotional products.
