Now there’s another story to add to what seems to be the daily soap opera drama, commonly known as the 2016 Presidential Election. This time Donald Trump wear has got yet another American citizen in trouble.  Just a few weeks ago, some San Antonio police officers found themselves in hot water when they decided to sport Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hats while on duty. Lesson learned: employees of a city government are prohibited from political activity on the job. Now, the infamous Trump hat and “basket of deplorables” T-shirt has landed a Texas man behind bars on electioneering charges. Cynthia Jaqua, the election coordinator for Comal County, Texas, told local ABC affiliate TV station, KSAT that electioneering isn’t limited to people holding signs outside of a polling place, and that’s why the police arrested Brett Mauthe of Bulverde, Texas.

Cynthia Jaqua, the election coordinator for Comal County, Texas, told local ABC affiliate TV station, KSAT that electioneering isn’t limited to people holding signs outside of a polling place, and that’s why the police arrested Brett Mauthe of Bulverde, Texas.

“It can mean a T-shirt, a button, a hat, you know?” Jaqua told KSAT. “Anything related to the voting, the party, the candidate.”

As the story goes, Mauthe complied with officials when they asked him to remove his hat. However, when they told him he would need to turn his shirt inside out, he refused. Mauthe said he wasn’t aware that wearing that kind of apparel was against the rules. Well to bad for Brett Mauthe, ignorance is not a valid excuse for unlawful activity. He was taken in police custody and now faces a class C misdemeanor.

Another interesting tidbit, Mauthe is the Vice President of Construction at Embrey Partners based in San Antonio, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at San Antonio and San Antonio College, making his ignorance of the law even that more unbelievable.
